Erg mooie expositie, maar moeilijk 1. om de kunstwerken terug te vinden (bovenstaand werk te plaatsen kostte me veel moeite) en 2. om duidelijk de ontwikkeling van de kunstwerken terug te vinden, te plaatsen in de tijd.

Het zal aan mij liggen/gelegen hebben. Hoe dan ook poogde ik het met terugwerkende kracht.

Dit is wat ik heb gevonden, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat ik de stukken die mij opvielen juist heb weten te plaatsen in de tijd.

Ik geef het nu maar zó, puur om de schoonheid; volgorde at random.

Voor de volledigheid meld ik wel dat de expositie chronologisch is ingedeeld in vijf tijdvakken: Harlem Renaissance, Post Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights, Black Renaissance en Bloom Generation. De gemeenschappelijke deler van de verschillende kunstenaars is de noodzaak om zich uit te drukken en daarmee een belangrijke Afrikaanse traditie in leven houden: storytelling.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 seemed to be the solution to the ongoing discrimination and segregation. But despite the afore mentioned periods racial inequality endured, leading to the rise of the Civil Rights Movement, Black Power and the Black Panthers. Black artists felt both motivated and obliged to address the problem. The AfriCOBRA group founded by Wadsworth Jarrell and others sought to communicate their ideology through an accessible visual language. Emory Douglas, the Black Panthers’ Minister of Culture, advocated a more activism-based approach.

Faith Ringgold, Tar Beach, 1990-1992. Ringgold is beroemd om haar vertellende quilts. Hier verhaalt ze van haar jeugd in Harlem, met in de zomer picnics op het teren dak.
